Easter Eats
For Christians, Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In many denominations it is preceded by Lent, a 40-day period of giving something up – usually unhealthy food or alcohol – as Christians recognise that Jesus spent 40 days without food in the desert. After this, it makes sense that many would look forward to a long weekend of Easter feasting!
Whether they’re painted or made from chocolate, Easter eggs have long been used as a symbol of new life, fertility and resurrection. Decorated eggs are hidden and children participate in Easter egg hunts to find them; eggs are also exchanged as gifts. Symbolically, the cracking of the egg is sometimes thought to represent the opening of Christ’s tomb; in Orthodox countries, eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Christ.
In addition to Easter eggs, many people enjoy hot cross buns, which are traditionally eaten on Good Friday and symbolise Jesus's crucifixion. While less popular in the UK, a sweet Easter bread wreath is eaten in many European countries.
Easter is also a great time for family gatherings. Roast lamb is a common dish for dinner on Easter Sunday, followed by roast ham in Northern Europe and North America. And for any family gathering, we have an ideal range of snacks and nibbles that everyone will enjoy.
