Eid Mubarak! All About Eid al-Adha 2018
Eid al-Adha is just around the corner and it's one of the most important dates in the Islamic calendar. Check out our guide to what and when Eid al-Adha is and how it's typically celebrated.
What is Eid al-Adha?
Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha commemorates the story of Ibrahim. It's said that Allah came to him in a dream and commanded him to sacrifice his son as a display of faith. Ibrahim complied, but at the last second, Allah replaced his son with a goat to reward his loyalty.
When is Eid al-Adha?
The dates change every year because they're dictated by the lunar calendar, but this year, Eid al-Adha is expected to begin on 21st August. It's a four-day festival that ends on the 25th August.
How is Eid al-Adha celebrated?
Eid al-Adha is the holiest event in the Islamic calendar, and is traditionally honoured with the sacrifice of animals (a tribute to the story of Ibrahim). The meat is shared among friends, family and the less fortunate. Of course, it's also a celebration, and loved ones gather together to share sweets, prayers and gifts.
