Easter Eggs Hunt - Do you know where it comes from?

But did you know that not all countries that celebrate Easter involve Easter Egg Hunts in the style we are familiar in the UK, in their festivities. Hamper Elf Andrea says “In Italy it's not that popular to do such things, but I would love to introduce my nephews to the idea. It seems such fun

Our custom of having the Easter Rabbit hide chocolate eggs around the garden, house or village (depending on the weather!) is believed to stem from Germany. Some believe it originates from the late 16th century when the Protestant reformer Martin Luther organised hunts for his congregation, hiding eggs for both women and children, in reference to the story of the resurrection where women discover the empty tomb. The link to the rabbit or hare appears to have evolved from the many pagan references to rabbits and chickens and lambs in the spring festival.

As with many of our religious festival traditions, it is thought that it was popularised and made into a nationwide custom by Queen Victoria who hunted ornate decorated eggs as a child in Kensington Palace hidden by her German mother and then passed the tradition down to her & Albert’s many children. Although their hunts took place on Maundy Thursday compared to Easter Sunday today. There are many references to these hunts in her extensive diaries.
